PRESS RELEASE
EMPOWERHER DIGITAL EMPOWERS B40 WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY
KUALA LUMPUR, 6 March 2025 – The EmpowerHER Digital programme, an initiative by the Ministry of Digital driven by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), with support from SMECorp Malaysia, has been launched to equip B40 women with digital skills and market access to generate income and build sustainable businesses in the digital economy.
As part of efforts to bridge the digital divide, this program offers interactive workshops, industry-sharing sessions, and a mini exhibition, providing participants with opportunities to learn digital business strategies, online branding, financing, and market access. Among the key industry partners involved are Shopee, TikTok, CGC Digital, and Pixlr.
Minister of Digital, YB Gobind Singh Deo, emphasized the importance of expanding this program to more states to ensure that more women, including those in rural areas, can benefit from the digital economy. “Digital transformation must be inclusive and open opportunities to all, especially the B40 group. Initiatives like EmpowerHER Digital play a crucial role in ensuring Malaysian women are not only tech-savvy but also capable of competing in the rapidly growing digital economy,” he stated.
MDEC Chief Executive Officer, Anuar Fariz Fadzil, said, “EmpowerHER Digital is not just about training; it is a movement to build a sustainable support ecosystem. This program equips B40 women with digital skills, market access, and mentorship to help them establish competitive businesses. As a facilitator of the country’s digital economy, MDEC ensures that women are not just technology users but also drivers of innovation in the digital economy.”
In addition to hands-on training, the program features casual sharing sessions with Amutha Subramaniam, Founder of Hers Manufacturing, Wei Yein, Co-Founder of Craftiviti, and Puan Nur Adila Binti Manshor, Founder of Rayhanah Malaysia. They share their experiences in building digital businesses and how technology has helped enhance their competitiveness.
According to data from Budget 2021, there is a significant gap between male and female traders on e-commerce platforms, with 654,530 male traders compared to only 280,100 female traders recorded in that year. This highlights the need for initiatives that encourage more women to participate in the e-commerce sector. The launch of EmpowerHER Digital 2025 reflects the commitment to collaboration between the government and the private sector in empowering women in the digital ecosystem. By creating more opportunities in digital entrepreneurship, this program not only helps enhance the competitiveness of B40 women but also contributes to the economic stability of individuals, families, and communities as a whole.
